"Information-friction" and its impact on minimum energy per communicated bit

چکیده
Just as there are frictional losses associated with moving masses on a surface, what if there are frictional losses associated with moving information on a substrate? We propose to model these losses as proportional to “bit-meters,” i.e., the product of mass of information (i.e., its entropy) and the distance of information transport. For communication across a binary input AWGN channel, by obtaining unavoidable lower bounds on bit-meters for decoding computation, we arrive at limits on energy consumption in decoding under this model. Using these lower bounds we show that the total (transmit + decoding) energy-per-bit must diverge to infinity as the target error probability is lowered.

Minimum Energy to Send k Bits Through the Gaussian Channel With and Without Feedback
The minimum achievable energy per bit over memoryless Gaussian channels has been previously addressed in the limit when the number of information bits goes to infinity, in which case it is known that the availability of noiseless feedback does not lower the minimum energy per bit, which is −1.59 dB below the noise level. This paper analyzes the behavior of the minimum energy per bit for memoryl...

متن کاملEnergy reduction in VLSI computation modules: an information-theoretic approach
We consider the problem of reduction of computation cost by introducing redundancy in the number of ports as well as in the input and output sequences of computation modules. Using our formulation, the classical “communication scenario” is the case when a computation module has to recompute the input sequence at a different location or time with high fidelity and low bit-error rates. We then co...

In wireless networks consisting of sensors and mobile devices, battery power is a severe resource constraint. Energyefficient communication techniques are therefore crucial to the long-term survivability of the network. In communication theory, it is well known that for a bandlimited additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with bandwidth W and onesided noise spectral level N0, the minimum ...
